Camira's Incredible Women: Finding a Passion for Technical Textiles
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the achievements of women across the business. Today, we’re joined by Louise Taylor, Senior Technical Developer at Camira, who has dedicated more than two decades to the textiles industry. From an apprentice to a Senior Technical Developer Louise discusses how a passion for technical textiles and supportive management has led her to a career that she loves.
“Find a career that interests you and makes you happy. You spend a significant portion of your younger years working, so you need to enjoy what you do.”
Where did it all start at Camira for you?
26 years ago I joined Camira - beginning with an apprenticeship in 1999. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after my GCSEs - I started A-levels but quickly realised they weren’t for me. I wanted to work, so I explored various apprenticeships, and textiles had always intrigued me. That’s when I decided to pursue it.
My role involves working closely with the design team to develop new products and bring them to market. I focus on the fabric’s technical performance and any treatments that need to be applied to meet specific technical parameters.
How Has Your Career Evolved Over the Years?
Starting as an apprentice, I worked diligently to gain expertise in textiles and management, completing multiple qualifications along the way. I’ve been fortunate to have a role that has evolved with my skills and interests. As I progressed, I’ve had the chance to contribute to some exciting projects, helping develop products that meet the highest standards in the industry.
What would your advice be for women in the workplace?
I'd encourage young women to follow their passions and pursue careers that bring them fulfillment. Find a career that interests you and makes you happy. You spend a significant portion of your younger years working, so you need to enjoy what you do. If you find something that excites you, it won’t feel like work.

“ I believe that workplaces are becoming more understanding of the need for flexibility.”
How do you juggle parenthood and a career?
Balancing work and family is a common challenge for many women - I’ve been fortunate to have worked part-time since having children. Some days can be tough, switching between ‘Mum’ mode and ‘Work’ mode, but the people I work with are incredibly supportive—both personally and professionally.
It’s about finding a balance that works for you and your family, and being open about your needs. It’s something I’ve been fortunate to experience here at Camira.
How has Camira supported you in your career and family life?
I've always had a supportive line manager, and if I’ve needed time with my family, it’s never been an issue. I believe that when you give your best at work and respect your employer, that respect is reciprocated.
This has been vital in my ability to thrive both at home and in my professional life. It’s all about working together and understanding that life outside of work is just as important.
What challenges do women faced as a woman in the workplace?
I've seen many positive changes in the workplace. However, it's been a balancing act of family and career - I think this is still one of the toughest challenges for women. Thankfully, things have improved over time, and I believe that workplaces are becoming more understanding of the need for flexibility.
