Haze Light by Zero

Based in Sweden, Zero Interiör was founded in 1978 with the vision of making unique light fixtures for a design-interested audience. These products, in combination with a deep understanding of how best to illuminate public indoor and outdoor environments, is at the heart of their identity. One of their most recent creations - the Haze light - was designed by British designer Samuel Wilkinson, and features a 3D knitted mesh fabric by Camira Technical Knitting.

"The inspiration for Haze came from an accident..."

Graduating from Ravensboure College of Art & Design in 2002 with a degree in furniture and related product design, Samuel Wilkinson worked with a number of leading consultancies before setting up his own industrial studio at the end of 2007. With his designs winning a number of awards, including London Design Museum's ‘2011 Design of the Year’ and the highly coveted D&AD ‘Black pencil’, Samuel has firmly established his position in the design world.

We caught up with him to to learn more about Haze, and why he chose to work with Camira in bringing his design to life.

Where did the inspiration for the Haze light come from?

The inspiration for Haze came about when we accidently laid some fabric over a rounded lamp and noticed the fading effect of light through a fabric.

"It was an obvious choice to work with Camira."

Why did you decide to work with Camira Technical Knitting in creating the mesh casing?

We worked on a few ideas around different approaches to use technical kitting, and as Camira are one of main suppliers in the UK it was an obvious Camira choice.

Could you tell us a little bit about how you took the design from conception to completion?

Development for Haze was actually quite quick because of the previous knowledge we had of the technical constraints for technical knitting. Camira's team understood exactly what we wanted and got very close with the first sample, so after that it was just a case of tidying up the details and trying to refine the mesh where possible.

Finally, we asked Per Gill, Owner and MD of Zero, to tell us about any exciting projects that are in the pipeline for this strikingly modern lighting company...

We are constantly developing new lighting fixtures. Right now we are working on several projects, for example new outdoor pole and bollard fixtures, acoustic indoor lights and more.

Some products will be launched this autumn and others will be released at the beginning/middle of next year.

You can learn more about Zero, the products they create, the projects they are featured in, and the designers they collaborate with here.
