Wool Fabrics

Wool is Mother Nature’s wonder fibre for textiles – a natural evolution which is ultra intelligent, supremely technical, rapidly renewable and environmentally sustainable.

Why Wool?

Natural performance case: inherent flame resistance, breathability, resilience, biodegradability, acoustic properties, longevity. Camira's genuine authority section.

Wool is the ultimate performance fibre, offering a unique combination of durability, comfort and safety that synthetic alternatives cannot match. Its microscopic, armour-like surface helps resist wear and maintain appearance over time, while the fibre's natural crimp provides resilience and recovery, preventing flattening in high-use seating.

Naturally breathable, wool can absorb and release moisture, helping regulate temperature and enhance comfort. Its soft drape and inherent stretch make it ideal for upholstery applications. Wool also delivers outstanding fire safety, thanks to its high moisture and nitrogen content, making it difficult to ignite and allowing it to char rather than melt or drip in a fire.

Wool is one of the world's most sustainable performance fibres, valued for its renewable, biodegradable and long-lasting nature. Grown annually as sheep produce a new fleece each year, wool is a naturally replenishing resource that can return to the environment at the end of its life. Its exceptional durability and resilience help extend the lifespan of upholstery and interior products, reducing the need for frequent replacement and supporting more responsible consumption.

Naturally breathable and temperature regulating, wool contributes to lasting comfort without relying on chemical treatments to deliver many of its performance benefits. Whether used as a wool bouclé, felted wool or wool-rich upholstery fabric, it offers a timeless combination of longevity, functionality and natural beauty. As a fibre that is renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable, wool plays an important role in creating more sustainable commercial interiors.

Types of Wool Fabric

Recycled Wool Fabric
Made using reclaimed wool fibres recovered from textile waste, recycled wool fabric helps reduce landfill and conserves virgin resources. It offers the same warmth, durability and natural comfort associated with wool while supporting circular design principles.

Wool & plant blends / Bast fibre fabrics
Created by compressing and matting wool fibres together, wool felt fabrics have a dense, non-woven structure with a smooth, tactile finish. They offer excellent durability, natural acoustic properties and a distinctive contemporary aesthetic.

Wool bouclé fabrics
Characterised by their looped yarn construction, wool bouclé fabrics have a richly textured, tactile surface that adds depth and warmth to interiors. They are prized for their comfort, visual interest and inviting, residential-inspired feel.

Worsted wool fabrics

Made from long wool fibres that are combed before spinning, worsted wool fabrics have a smooth, refined appearance and excellent durability. Their crisp weave, natural resilience and sophisticated finish make them ideal for commercial upholstery applications.

Performance & compliance

Martindale, Crib 5/EN 1021 (wool's natural FR advantage), cleanability, colour-fastness.

Wool is a high-performance fibre that delivers exceptional durability, safety and appearance retention, making it ideally suited to demanding commercial interiors.

Naturally flame retardant, wool is widely regarded as one of the safest textile fibres available. Its naturally high moisture and nitrogen content make it difficult to ignite, while its low heat release helps slow flame spread. In the event of combustion, wool forms a protective char layer that acts as a barrier to oxygen, enabling it to self-extinguish once the ignition source is removed. Unlike many synthetic materials, wool also produces low levels of smoke and toxic fumes, supporting safer evacuation in the event of a fire. These inherent properties help wool fabrics meet rigorous contract upholstery standards, including EN 1021 and BS 5852 Crib 5.

Wool also offers outstanding durability and abrasion resistance. The natural elasticity of the fibre allows it to bend and recover from compression, delivering excellent Martindale performance and helping upholstered furniture maintain its appearance even in high-traffic environments. This remarkable power of recovery reduces signs of wear and extends product lifespan.

From a maintenance perspective, wool's microscopic outer layer provides a natural defence against staining and soiling, preventing dirt particles from penetrating deeply into the fibre. Combined with its antistatic properties, this helps fabrics stay cleaner for longer and makes routine maintenance easier.

In addition, wool delivers excellent colour-fastness. Its fibre structure absorbs dye exceptionally well, creating rich, saturated colours that retain their vibrancy over time. Resistant to fading from everyday use, cleaning and light exposure, wool upholstery fabrics maintain their aesthetic appeal and continue to perform beautifully throughout their lifecycle.
