Camira's Incredible Women: Embracing Apprenticeships
The fifth installment in Camira's Incredible Women series features Camira's HR Apprentice, Chelsey Rigg. Chelsey talks about her reasons for choosing an apprenticeship to kickstart her HR career and her advice for young women considering this route in the lead up to International Women's Day.
“If you are given the opportunity, then definitely go for it! ”
What would your advice be to other young women considering an apprenticeship?
If you are given the opportunity, then definitely go for it! My apprenticeship has been an incredible way to gain hands-on experience within the HR field, build confidence, and learn from experienced professionals who have had successful careers in this field. You don’t need to have all the knowledge and answers from day one—what’s most important is being open to learning and exploring different routes of work. It’s about growth, and you’ll gain valuable experience that will help shape your future.
Can you tell us a bit about what your role involves?
As a HR Apprentice, I’m the go-to person for all things related to our employee systems. This has played a huge part in my integration into the HR team, and I’m proud of the assistance I’ve been able to provide. My role also involves supporting recruitment, helping employees with their queries, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. As a team, we take pride in knowing that our work helps create a positive and inclusive workplace through initiatives like our Employee Voice Service.
What are your aspirations for the future?
Right now, I’m focused on learning as much as I can and developing my skills through my apprenticeship and Level 3 CIPD qualification. I love that this role exposes me to so many different aspects of the workplace, from recruitment to employee relations, and I’m excited to see where this experience takes me. In the future, I’d love to continue growing in a role where I can support and work with people every day, fostering an environment that encourages growth and well-being.

“I believe that the more we lift each other up, the stronger we become.”
What do you think are the biggest challenges for women in the workplace today?
Women in the workplace, especially in male-dominated industries like manufacturing, can face challenges, particularly when it comes to confidence. There have been moments when I’ve second-guessed myself, even though I know I’m fully capable. However, workplaces are evolving, and as part of the HR team, I feel fortunate to be in a position to help champion diversity and inclusion. Our work focuses on supporting women and creating environments where they can thrive, which is so important for long-term change.
Do you have any advice for women facing these challenges in their careers?
My advice would be to always believe in yourself and stay confident in your abilities. It's important to trust that you belong in any space, regardless of the industry or position. Don't let moments of doubt hold you back—push through them and keep learning. Embrace mentorship, seek out supportive environments, and remember that you are always capable of achieving more than you think.
