ARC Clubs, London

A new kind of neighbourhood workplace.

Designed for local people who work alone or in teams, ARC Clubs are co-working spaces that provide members with just the right amount of everything - nothing more and nothing less. In an over-designed category, ARC Clubs champion pragmatic design. True style without the excess.

Fabrics featured: Main Line Flax.

Taking the best of what the traditional work environment has to offer and ditching the rest.

Co-founded by Caro Lundin and Hannah Philp, the first ARC Club opened in in Homerton, Hackney in 2020, followed by two more branches in Camberwell Green and Harrow. Leading the design of the spaces, Caro explains her vision, “The challenge with ARC Club was to create a scalable solution. Since affordability is at the heart of our offering, my approach had to be one that embraced the constraints of the space, while delivering something that was neither commercial nor boring.

I drew inspiration from the beautiful utility of mid-century prefabrication - and there is no denying the Scandinavian influence. If I could describe the mood I wanted to achieve with ARC, it would be the comfort of ‘lagom’. A space in which people feel inspired to get stuff done."

Occupying residential neighbourhoods, ARC Clubs are an accessible sanctuary.

Where other coworking spaces occupy characterful prime real estate or build from scratch, ARC Clubs are designed to plug seamlessly into a neutral space. Hannah, CEO, explains their ethos a little further, "Coworking has been around for a while now. Think large-scale corporate spaces with table tennis – and a price tag to match. It’s time for a different kind of workspace. Excellent but affordable. One built on human values; accessible, adaptable and designed to put the many different needs of individuals – and teams – first. Enter the neighbourhood workspace. Professional but never corporate. Beautiful but not exclusive. A small-scale, friendly place that, like a coffee shop or a library, you can just drop-in to – but designed expressly for work."

An essentialist approach, foregrounding light, comfort and surprise offers optimised experience at an accessible price.

Using durable and affordable materials; textured stone and warm birch ply, ARC Clubs are designed to last - and to scale. A modular pod system operates on a standard sheet size grid, making it easily replicable, while custom-built furniture provides continuity across different locations, and secondhand pieces, mindful use of colour and playful touches provide just the occasional twist.

ARC Clubs are a place in which to work. Beautiful but not necessarily ‘Instagrammable’.

A place to inhabit, not to broadcast, ARC Clubs promise peace - in stark contrast to the messy home office or chaotic cafe. Different seats cater for different moods - with shared tables for routine work, and a quiet zone and private booths for deeper thought. As Caro explains, "Contrary to pre-pandemic coworking styling, resourcefulness is at the heart of the design; befitting a world where coworking is a necessity and not a lifestyle accessory. What might seem simple is full of attention to detail, designed to help members focus; the smell of linoleum, the warmth of ply tables baking in the sun, the gradual movement of abundant light."
