'The Weaver's Block' by Rohini Sharma

If you’ve passed by our London showroom in Clerkenwell over the last few weeks, you may have seen the vibrant installation in our window. Titled ‘The Weaver’s Block’, featuring a number of exquisite, jewel-colored handcrafted weaves, it’s certainly an eye-catching piece of work – and we’re proud to say that it was designed, woven and installed by a Camira intern; Rohini Sharma.

A graduate of Weaving at the Cass School of Art, Rohini has been assisting our team in London for the past few months; immersing herself in the use of fabric in commercial interiors and its application to furniture. We spoke with her to explore the inspiration and weaving techniques behind the installation:

Interview with Rohini

Tell us a little about the ‘The Weaver’s Block’.

The work I’ve produced as a student has always focused on woven woollen textiles, and it’s a fabric both myself and Camira are really passionate about so I was keen to incorporate it into the installation. I’m also interested in the concept of double cloth (a type of woven fabric that is made using two or more warp yarns and one or more weft fabrics) so I sought to create a piece that combined the two. The block part of the title comes from my exploration of shapes within the double cloth to identify the dynamics of the woven structure, and I continued to execute this theme in the design process for the window displays.

How did you choose the colour palette and style of your creation?

My primary focus was to ensure that the piece complemented the showroom’s visuals, so I worked alongside the Camira team to establish a theme and choose a colour palette that was in harmony with the scheme and fabrics showcased at the Clerkenwell location.
 
Using my existing knowledge of shape and colour I wanted to continue to build on this experience for the displays, creating intricate patterns in vibrant colour ways, but simplified to accommodate the process of frame weaving.

‘The Weaver’s Block’ is currently installed in our Clerkenwell showroom.
