The Survivor Sofa Story at Real to Reel

During 2015 we were proud to collaborate with the RSA (The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) and Great Recovery Project on the Survivor Sofa story.

During the project a sofa found in a skip was deconstructed, re-designed and resurrected – demonstrating the conservation and reuse of furniture in a circular economy. We retrieved waste fabric off-cuts, as part of our take-back scheme with UK furniture manufacturers, which were regenerated into fiber, re-spun and woven into a new ‘closed-loop’ distinctive, herringbone design textile, used to recover the sofa.

The documentary film, made during the project, telling the story of skip to sofa, is being featured at the Real to Reel Craft Film Festival taking place on 4 and 5 May. The Craft Film Festival, launched by the Crafts Council and Crafts Magazine, selected 36 films that examine relationships with materials and making. The Survivor Sofa story, directed by Paul Wyatt, features insight from designers, manufacturers, waste managers and community organizations such as re-use networks and recycling center.
