Jens Risom Design by Camira
Mid-century, made modern.
One of the most influential and celebrated designers of the mid-century modern movement, Jens Risom transformed people’s perception of how furniture could look.
Jens Risom was a Danish American furniture and textile designer, recognised for bringing Scandinavian design to the US. With many of his designs now considered to be classics, Jens’ furniture has remained in near continuous production since Jens Risom Design began in 1946.
We are the first company to recreate Jens’ textiles, over 40 years after they were originally released. Our aim with the two fabrics, Zap and Armadillo, is to make his designs as relevant today as they were when they were first created.
The answer is Risom
Born in Copenhagen in 1916, Jens Risom went on to become a pioneer of mid-century modern – firmly ensconced in the design hall of fame thanks to his creation of the sleek, iconic furniture that was equally at home in the Oval Office as it was in his summer retreat in Block Island, USA.
Creating his own distinct brand, Jens pioneered a unique blend of Danish minimalism with American style that is still perennially popular – with a number of his designs remaining in continuous production since their inception, as well as being permanently housed in prestigious institutions in the US, such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.
Reimagined by Camira
Working closely with the Risom family and FORM Portfolios, Camira has recreated two fabrics designed and manufactured by Jens Risom. With sustainability laying at the core of our development process, we have reinterpreted Jens’ fabrics with the environment, our surroundings and longevity in mind – whilst always remaining true to the colours, textures and tones of the original Zap and Armadillo.
Reducing the nylon composition of the 1950’s designs - and incorporating flax yarn for Armadillo - has delivered fabrics that are highly durable, inherently flame retardant and maintain our commitment to using environmentally-friendly bast fibres.
Armadillo is made from a wool-rich flax yarn which is colour woven using three yarns. With a palette of 12 selective colours, it embraces bold pops of colour that bring the calm, muted tones to life.
