Lancaster University

Lancaster University's library  is used by more than 40,000 students per week and underwent a full refurbishment to create a learning space for the 21st Century - meeting the challenges of space and interaction between students and staff, and providing a solution to merge traditional library services with spaces for interactive and informal learning. To highlight the established reputation the university has for research, the design needed to embody this message by creating dedicated areas for postgraduate students.

A fluid and flexible way of working

Sheppard Robson encapsulated the brief and designed a working library with a combination of individual and group workspaces. The library offers a fluid and flexible way of working to support different learning styles.

Camira’s Oxygen and Blazer ranges are used throughout the library for the task seating and some wall panels. The durability of Oxygen, featured in Inhale, meant it was ideal for task seating and our pure wool Blazer fabric, was the preference due to the grey mélange in the Camphill colorway, which helps to disguise marks.

The project which was achieved whilst keeping the library fully operational, with no book or resource unavailable throughout the entire construction phase of the project.
