From Hector’s Dolphin to Just a Drop
We’ve a strong social conscience which underpins our charitable giving. Our Blazer fabric supported the endangered Hector’s Dolphin, with a contribution for every metre sold going to the New Zealand Whale and Dolphin Trust. This was matched by our wool partner Wools of New Zealand, recognising the provenance of the wool source, together we raised $37,000.
With our Synergy fabric we’ve moved from provenance to process, acknowledging that water is core to wool textile manufacturing. That’s not a problem where water is plentiful, but for many in the world get barely a drop. Globally there are an estimated 750 million people without safe water and 2.5 billion without adequate sanitation. So for every yard of Synergy we sell, we make a donation to Just a Drop, in support of a water project in Kenya. Our value chain partners are also contributing; Camira’s donation is matched by Wools of New Zealand with additional contributions from yarn spinners Safil and textile finishers WT Johnsons.
We’re building a supply chain with integrity, working closely with our partners to develop sustainable and responsible initiatives. In 2011 we set about obtaining cotton yarns for our moquette backings directly from Pakistani mills, rather than via agents, as a means of building direct relationships and ensuring best social practices were in place. These suppliers are accredited to the social compliance standards SA8000:2008 and IMO Fair for Life which ensures core labour rights are respected; they operate in safe conditions and have positive relations with the local community.
